Call to invest in Midlothian cycle path network

Councillor Ian Baxter (Green) has criticised Midlothian Council over its lack of investment in cycling infrastructure.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the Planning Committee, he suggested that developer contributions from new housing developments should be earmarked for improving the local cycle path network.

Highlighting the contrast between Midlothian Council, which relies on external funding, and the City of Edinburgh Council’s commitment to spend 7 per cent of its Revenue and Capital Transport budgets on cycling facilities, he said that investment in the Dalkeith to Penicuik Walkway/Cycleway would encourage residents to commute to Dalkeith or the Bush by bicycle rather than driving.
