GOREBRIDGE Community Council is backing calls for the new Newbattle Community High School to be located in a more central position.
Last week’s meeting agreed to write the council giving their position on the proposed new-build.
As revealed exclusively in the Advertiser, it was recently announced that government funding had been secured and that the new-build will go-ahead.
Since then, the main topic of debate ahead of a planned consultation has been where the building should be based.
With the school serving the areas of Mayfield, Newtongrange and Gorebridge many are calling for a new central location, rather than the current one at Easthouses.
Archie Pacey told last week’s meeting: “I would like to propose that we write a letter to the council expressing our view that we are delighted with the news [that the new school has the go-ahead[ and we feel it should be located centrally. That is vital, as this is one of the first decisions to be made.”
Midlothian South Councillor Jim Muirhead (Lab), who had championed the view that a central location of Crawlees Road would be the best location for the new school, told the meeting he welcomed the community council’s decision to send a letter, but warned that plans to re-locate there could prove costly.
