Midlothian Council is to bid for Historic Scotland funding for a Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) for Penicuik.

If the funding bid is successful the scheme would follow CARS projects in Dalkeith and Gorebridge.

Councillor Jim Bryant (SNP), the cabinet member for economic development, said: “I’m pleased that we will be submitting a bid. Penicuik is well placed for such funding not only because it recently established a Business Improvement District in the town centre but also because it has a solid historic and architectural heritage.

“The most recent substantial town centre redevelopment was in the 1980s, so the chance to renovate and repair traditional buildings would have a significant impact on the look of the town centre.

“We’ve all seen how Dalkeith and Gorebridge is benefiting from the CARS scheme and we’re hopeful Penicuik could enjoy the same regeneration opportunities.”
