Improvements will be made to a Mayfield road junction which is concerning residents.
Midlothian Council is to help pedestrians using the sharp Easthouses Road/Suttieslea Road corner.
The busy junction is next to the access road to Newbattle Medical Centre and there are local fears that the road layout and traffic speed pose a danger to people walking in the area.
As reported in last week’s Advertiser, Mayfield and Easthouses Community Council voiced its concern at a recent meeting, noting a second serious accident at the 90-degree bend.
Midlothian Council confirmed there had been four injury road traffic accidents in the three years to April 30 this year.
Councillor Wilma Chalmers (Lab), cabinet member for commercial services, said: “These accidents were all caused by different factors, and speed alone has not been identified as the main cause of any of these accidents.
“However, it is proposed to extend the 30mph speed limit zone to include the bend in the road. In addition, footway links will be provided over the grassed area to assist pedestrians to cross at the safest location. The council will continue to monitor road traffic accident statistics.”
