Charges are to be introduced for day care provision at Cherry Road, the council’s resource centre for people with learning disabilities based in Bonnyrigg.
The move, according to council leader Owen Thompson (SNP), will not only generate £30,000 but will ensure equality of provision.
He said: “I accept there is a question as to whether anyone should be paying at all but the reason behind this is equality. We have people who currently pay and people who don’t, when essentially they are getting the same service.
“What we need is consistency across the board.”
