For Newtongrange couple Tommy and Margaret Pearson, a love affair of more than 60 years started not with a kiss, but a chip.
The couple, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on November 28, met on the evening of Tommy’s 21st birthday, outside a chip shop in Dalkeith.
Tommy remembers Margaret leaving the shop with a bag of chips in her hand.
The silver-tongued Casanova clearly saw something he fancied and brazenly told the pretty young woman “I’ll have one of those” as he reached into the bag to help himself!
Luckily for Tommy, Margaret was far from offended, and the rest, as they say, is history,
A machinist with the Lothian Coal Board, Tommy (87) was born and raised in Newtongrange while Margaret (83), who worked as a waitress at Little John’s restaurant in Edinburgh, was living in Arniston when they first met.
