THE leader of the Newbattle consultation Don Ledingham has spoken of communities taking over any facilities if they close, but how do community leaders feel about that?
Archie Pacey, chairman of the Gorebridge Community Development Trust revealed they are currently focusing on the new community hub to be built there.
He said: “If the development trust were in the position to take on the library and the leisure centre it would.
“But we are not at a stage to say that.”
Chairman of Newtongrange Community Council, Jason Ferry has spoken to council officials about taking over facilities.
He said: “They have mentioned it briefly. We told them we are aware community trusts can work, but we have no experience of this.
“It’s very reliant on the work of volunteers and we don’t know what kind of volunteer base we have in the village.”
Mayfield Community Council chairman Robert Hogg said: “We support the new school but are concerned about the closure of community facilities.
“If they closed here we would want to be in a position to save these buildings for the community.”
