The former John Chant Centre in Penicuik has been demolished to make way for affordable housing.

Midlothian Council is submitting a formal planning application for the Eastfield Farm Road site this month.

Tenders were first invited to demolish the building back in October 2013.

There was no need by the council to notify neighbours. The contractor took advantage of the bank holiday Monday to carry out the work.

A council spokesman said: “It is now going to be housing - 12 units (single bedroom flats) to accommodate adults with complex care needs.

“These needs can be learning difficulties, autism and complex physical disabilities.

“Obviously, this will be highly supported accommodation but the aim is to give the people living in them as much independence as possible.”

It is expected that work will get underway on the housing development in August.

The John Chant Centre, a resource centre for adults with additional needs, closed in 2011 following a review of day care services by Midlothian Council.
