Preparations are being made for the local council elections, which will take place on Thursday, May 3.

And assurances have been given that everything will be done to ensure there is no repeat of the 2007 debacle.

The notice of election will be published on March 13, and all candidates must have lodged their nomination papers at Midlothian House by 4pm on March 29.

The closing date for voters to be included on the electoral roll is April 18.

The deadline for applications for postal votes is 5pm on April 18. Postal ballots will be posted out on April 23.

Updating Midlothian councillors last week, chief executive Kenneth Lawrie, the returning officer, said the counting of votes would take place at Lasswade High School Centre, Bonnyrigg, although the timing has still to be decided.
