Council tops payout table

Midlothian Council has splashed out almost £5 million in legal fees to fight equal pay cases and tribunals against its own staff over the last five years, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.

Figures obtained by The Scotsman newspaper revealed that the local authority paid out a total of £496,746 – more than any other in Scotland.

A spokesperson for the council said that it had a small in-house legal team and so was forced to buy in specialised advice from external companies.
