Midlothian Council leader Owen Thompson is setting his sights on sitting at Westminster as an MP.
The Midlothian West councillor received the Bonnyrigg, Loanhead and District SNP branch nomination as the party’s candidate for May’s General Election.
Nominations close at the end of the month. If there are other candidates, party elections must take place by the end of January.
Councillor Thompson said: “There is still an internal selection process to follow but having been asked by many local residents and members if I would consider standing. I feel now is the right time for me to use the skills and experience I have gained in my nine years as a councillor to mount a campaign to represent my community at Westminster.”
