When I noticed that this female Dance Fly was carrying a dead Hoverfly while mating, I assumed she had managed to catch it despite being coupled to a male Dance Fly.
That would have been unusual enough, but a bit of research has revealed a much more surprising story behind this scene.
It seems that female Dance Flies will only agree to being mated after the male has presented a ‘gift’ of a dead insect!
