Country Corner

With swallows and house martins now gathering on overhead wires while preparing to set off south, it is a good time to learn how to tell them apart.

My picture shows a house martin on the left and a swallow on the right. Swallows have a ruddy-coloured throat and dark breast band. House martins show much more white, both on their throats and rumps.

Do not be confused by the tails of this pair.

Swallows actually have much longer tail streamers than martins, it’s just that this one is a recently-fledged swallow, yet to grow streamers.

Read George Hogg’s Country Corner column every week.
