A photograph to prove it was not humans who invented barbed wire !
Not only does the Peacock butterfly have one of the most spined and spiked of British caterpillars; it always lays its eggs on stinging nettles for extra security!
Strangely, the butterfly lays great clusters of eggs which hatch into a very conspicuous wriggling black mass of caterpillars.
It’s as if they have such confidence in the caterpillars’ spines and the nettle’s stings, they do not see the need for the well-camouflaged green caterpillars of so many other species.
