Attempted armed robbery in Penicuik

Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted armed robbery at a Penicuik newsagent.

The incident happened at the Newsboyz store in Pentland Terrace on Monday, April 7 at around 3.20pm.

A 44-year-old man was working alone within the shop when a male entered and presented a knife before demanding money from the till.

The shop assistant refused and the male fled empty-handed.

No one was injured. However, police are now urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, 5ft 8ins tall with a thin build. He was wearing a black hat and scarf, which covered his face, a black jacket and spoke with a local accent.

Officers also believe a second male was standing outside keeping watch and enquiries are ongoing to trace him too.

Detective Constable Andy Hope said: “Fortunately, the shop assistant was not injured during this incident. However, he was left very distressed as a result and we are eager to hear from anyone who can help us in tracing those responsible.

“Anyone who was in the Pentland Terrace area on Monday afternoon and remembers seeing anything suspicious is asked to contact police immediately.

“In addition, anyone with any further information relevant to this investigation is also asked to get in touch.”
