Crimes of dishonesty – theft, shoplifting and house-breaking – have increased by more than 13 per cent in Midlothian in the past year.
New 2013/14 statistics from Police Scotland also show that local officers have had success tackling sexual crime with a fall in the number of sexual offences and rapes.
The number of sexual offences reported in the county in 2013-14 fell by 11 per cent on the previous year. There were six fewer rapes reported and the detection rate for this crime has risen to almost 89 per cent.
While the number of reported theft-related crimes rose, the detection rate increased slightly to 36 per cent in Midlothian.
