Riley McKenna shouted and swore at the terrified woman before making threats to harm himself during a disturbing incident at the house in Dunbar.

McKenna, 26, told his mother she should “hang herself” before she had to run to a nearby bedroom and push a chest of drawers against the door.

Neighbours overheard the commotion and called the police.

McKenna appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month and admitted to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards his mother in September this year.

Sheriff Alistair Noble was told during the incident McKenna threatened to smash the family TV which forced his mother to grab the set and run to her bedroom for safety.

McKenna, from Moredun, Edinburgh, returned to the dock yesterday where the sheriff ordered him to be placed on an offenders supervision order to monitor his behaviour over the next 12 months.
