Falling across both lanes of the road, the tree landed on the bonnet and roof of the taxi, stopping it in its tracks.

Miraculously, the driver managed to get out of the car unscathed.

One witness, describing the scene, said she “felt sick” after hearing a “really loud bang” as the tree crashed to the ground outside the Costa Coffee outlet near the roundabout.

“People in the queue ran to help,” she said, but was relieved when the driver “got out and seemed fine”.

“It could have been so much worse,” she added.

Police officers closed South Cramond Road in both directions in response to the incident.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We were called around 3.30pm on Friday, 22 May, to a report of a tree falling on a taxi in Cramond Road South, Edinburgh. No one was injured but the road is currently blocked."

High winds across Edinburgh have caused a number of trees to fall onto roadways, including on Old Dalkeith Road, where a downed tree blocked the carriageway near Liberton Golf Club.
