Officers said the man had been traced “safe and well”, adding that he had been taken to hospital for treatment.

Emergency services, including two fire engines, had rushed to the scene at around 6:20pm this afternoon, shutting the road to traffic, and causing widespread disruption to public transport services.

Edinburgh Council had warned people to avoid the area, while Lothian buses warned passengers that the 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 14, 27, 29, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37, 41, 47, and 49 buses would all not travel along their usual routes along the bridge.

That diversion is no longer in place.

Edinburgh resident, Shiv Das, told the Evening News: “We saw two fire engines and many police officers patrolling North Bridge which was closed off.

"It seemed to be a serious incident,” he added.
