The 49-year-old from Kirkliston said he had to chase the vandals from his car late on Tuesday evening after they had scratched slurs into the door and smashed out windows.

The incident occurred after online, so-called vigilantes incorrectly identified the car in a group called Edinburgh Exposure.

It is understood that he has no connection with the suspected paedophile who was the intended target of the attack.

The man who has three young children in the home along with his partner said that he is in disbelief at the actions of the vandals

He said: “I was physically sick when I saw the damage, this was the first car I bought after 25 years of company cars. There is also a huge sentimental attachment to a car that is mainly used to ferry my three children around and for employment.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers are appealing to anyone who may have any information which might assist in catching those responsible to call them on the 1010 number, quoting the reference number 3899 of 18 August 2020.”
