Police find 'no crime' following reported sex attack on 19-year-old near Midlothian golf club

A previous police appeal to the public said a woman had been walking on a path through a wooded area near Newbattle Golf Club, Dalkeith, on Sunday when she was attacked by a man.

But a statement released from Police Scotland on Thursday afternoon confirmed that enquiries had been carried out and “it had been established that no crime took place.”

Detective Inspector Susan Balfour, of CID at Dalkeith Police Station, said: “I would like to thank members of the public for their assistance with our enquiries. We are continuing to engage with the complainer to ensure that, where required, she has appropriate support.”

Chief Inspector Arron Clinkscales, area commander for Midlothian, said: "I also want to thank the local community and key partners for their support and assistance during this investigation. I am aware that this incident has caused considerable concern, however I wish to reassure the public that following extensive enquiry it has been established that no crime has taken place."

The path concerned in the initial public appeal was near where the body of murdered Jodi Jones was discovered in 2003. The case was recently reexamined by two former detectives in a controversial Channel 5 documentary.
