Among the most dangerous men to serve time at Addiewell has been David Collins, 48, who was jailed for life for murdering a man in a machete attack, chopping up his body and dumping his torso in a wheelie bin.

The brute beheaded 32-year-old Kevin Bishop after killing him at his home in Paisley in July 2018.

Collins admitted dismembering his victim's body and had denied murder but was found guilty.

After his conviction it emerged that Collins had a previous conviction for culpable homicide. He killed his abusive drunk father - also called David - in an attack with a sword in 2002.

One of the most feared inmates was Robert ‘Birdman’ O’Hara, the leader of a Glasgow drugs gang which terrorised parts of the city.

O'Hara, then 27, ordered the 2004 murder of the brother-in-law of a rival drug dealer in a horrific broad daylight blades and baton attack.

The following year he was ordered to serve a minimum 20 years but was said to continue running his vast heroin and cocaine network from his cell in Addiewell.

The highest-profile Addiewell inmate was Nat Fraser, who has repeatedly appealed his conviction for the murder of his estranged wife Arlene, 33, who vanished from her home in New Elgin, Morayshire, in 1998.

No trace of the mum-of-two has ever been found and prosecutors believe she was dismembered and burned in an incinerator.
