Two West Lothian drivers were slapped with £100 fines and had three points added to their licenses after the cars they were driving were fitted with tinted windows that were too dark.

The vehicles were stopped by the Road Police team in Livingston last night (Saturday) to have their tinted windows inspected.

The first vehicle was tested and found to have an average visual light transmission of just fiver per cent. The second vehicle was only letting in 17 per cent of light.

The Road Police team explained on Twitter that any vehicle manufactured after April 1, 1985, the windscreen is required to let through 75 per cent of light and the driver and front passenger door windows must let through 70 per cent. The rear window and side windows behind the driver don't have a minimum requirement.

Posting about the stoppages, they wrote: “This vehicle was stopped earlier by #LivingstonRP due to concerns over the window tinting. Officers tested the level of tint and found the car to have an average visual light transmission of 5%. It should be 70%! Driver issued with a conditional offer of 3 points & £100 fine.”

Shortly later, another post was made, saying: “Another window tint check for #LivingstonRP this evening. This time the windows were only letting in 17% of light. At night this would reduce the drivers ability to see out clearly. Driver issued with 3 points and £100 fine and had to peel tint off the relevant windows #StayLegal.”
