The helicopter circled for over an hour, using a searchlight to sweep the areas.

It was being used as part of a police operation in the city as officers searched for a missing person.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police in Edinburgh were called after a woman in her fifties was reported missing from the Goldenacre area on Tuesday night.

“Specialist resources were deployed, including the Police Scotland helicopter.

“The woman was traced safely in East Lothian this morning.”

Police have confirmed that the missing person was subsequently found.
