A miners’ welfare organisation has expressed fears that plans for a community hub in Woodburn have been abandoned.
The suggestion, made by the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation, is that Dalkeith Miners’ Charitable Society (DMCS) is no longer proceeding with a project to build on land adjacent to Dalkeith Miners club.
The two parties have been involved in a legal dispute concerning the transferal of land at the Woodburn Road site.
Midlothian MP David Hamilton (Lab), who last year chaired a meeting at which both were present, this week told the Advertiser: “At that meeting there was a clear agreement that CISWO did not have a problem transferring the land to the club [Dalkeith Miners]. “Within a week I received a letter from CISWO saying that they had reconsidered their position and now wanted to retain the land.
“What annoys me is that we had an agreement but then CISWO reneged within a week. Money cannot be packaged together [for a community hub] until ownership of the land has been identified.”
