A band of Dalkeith youngsters have been nominated for a royal award after turning their lives around with help from youth charity The Prince’s Trust Scotland.
The 11 youths have been shortlisted for an award at The Prince’s Trust & Samsung Celebrate Success Awards, which is taking place at The Marriott Hotel in Glasgow this Thursday (November 20).
Each member of the group had joined Team, a 12-week personal development programme aimed at giving unemployed young people the skills and confidence to find work.
For two weeks, after scouting the area for derelict shop fronts and buildings, they took on the job of brightening up the historic Dalkeith Corn Exchange. They then decided to create a series of illustrated boards, themed around stories from Dalkeith’s past. Next came group brainstorming and decision making, research, fundraising for materials through a bake sale, sourcing materials, developing creative ideas and producing the final illustrated boards.
Once finished, the team organised a launch in Dalkeith Arts Centre, playing host to an invited audience including councillors, college staff and local authority employees.
