Deaths from superbug up

THE number of deaths caused by the so-called “superbug” MRSA in the Lothians has increased.

The region bucked the national trend, with 25 patients’ deaths recorded as being linked to superbug infection in the last year.

This figure is up from 18 the year before.

Dr Alison McCallum, director of public health at NHS Lothian, said: “Overall, the number of deaths from MRSA in Lothian has been on a downward trend for the past decade, and it is important to recognise that these figures can fluctuate.”
