MP slams Government plans for more nukes
Midlothian MP Owen Thompson has slammed the UK Government’s plans to increase the permitted stockpile of nuclear weapons by more than 40 per cent.
Westminster will increase the limit of nuclear warheads from 180 to 260 as part of the Integrated Review of Foreign, Defence, Security and Development policy.
Mr Thompson is a long term campaigner against nuclear weapons and has previously raised concerns over nuclear convoys passing through Midlothian.
He has raised parliamentary questions about the cost to the public purse and safety concerns about the plans to increase the nuclear stockpile.
Mr Thompson said: “Planning to increase the nuclear arsenal is an appalling message for Brexit Britain to send the world. It reeks of hypocrisy at a time when we are supposed to be reducing the global stockpiles of WMDs .
“We are talking about weapons which can indiscriminately kill millions of people and annihilate the planet. This is not to be used as some sort of virility symbol for an insecure PM leading a government still mourning the loss of British Empire.
“It is not only immoral, it is economically absurd to seek more nuclear weapons, at a time when so many businesses are on their knees. Our NHS staff are told they can afford no more than a one per cent pay rise and the poorest countries are facing massive cuts in lifeline aid - yet the PM thinks the priority is to threaten the world with a new nuclear arms race.”
