In what has been described as a “devastating blow” to Midlothian, bus operator First Scotland East has revealed plans to axe almost all local services and close its only depot in the county at the cost of up to 200 jobs.
The bombshell announcement was delivered as the company confirmed that “the bulk” of its Midlothian services were to be withdrawn in June.
That would leave just three services – from East Lothian to the Dalkeith community schools campus – remaining.
Blaming poor trading performance and financial pressures, First has indicated that strong competition from Lothian Buses made it impossible to sustain its services.
Managing Director Paul Thomas said: “We appreciate this will be distressing news for many of our staff and also unwelcome news for customers.
“However, we have for some time been running a number of services at a loss.
