A diabetes sufferer has hit out at Newbattle Medical Practice in Mayfield for refusing to take the syringes he had used to inject his medication.

William Weir (48), who has been diabetic for 10 years, was shocked at the refusal as his previous surgeries in Gorebridge and the Borders safely disposed of them for him.

When he moved to Mayfield recently and joined Newbattle Medical Practice he was told to dispose of them himself. He said: “I inject myself with insulin three times a day.

“Gorebridge gave me a container and once it was full of needles I handed it back. But Newbattle said they can give me the container but can’t take it back.

“They are basically telling me to put it in the bin.”

The surgery has now done a u-turn and agreed to take the needles.

Sandra Allan, practice manager at Newbattle Medical Practice, said: “Thanks to our patient raising his concerns we now have clarity around the issuing and disposal of sharps boxes.”
