Dismay as vandals trash play area during revamp

POLICE are hunting vandals who caused thousands of pounds worth of damage at a city play park that is currently being upgraded.

The attacks were carried out at Saughton Park, with its “teenage tower” being set on fire, causing more than £4000 worth of damage.

Contractors have fenced off the site to install new play equipment, but vandals have damaged the park on more than one occasion between October 21 and 25.

The latest spate of vandalism follows a vandal attack in 2007 that caused an estimated £50,000 worth of damage.

Pat Carr, chair of Stenhouse, Saughton Mains and Whitson Community Council said: “We just felt terrible when we heard the news. We were so pleased when we heard that work was finally just getting started. We’d seen the plans and they look absolutely fantastic.

“It’s sad that such mindless vandalism can undermine the good work of so many people.”

A police spokesman said no-one had yet been arrested over the vandalism.
