A Gorebridge mum is appealing to members of the public to back a charity campaign to give her 11-year-old daughter the holiday of her dreams.
Gorebridge Primary School pupil Rebecca Spooner was diagnosed with Costello syndrome when she was four-years-old, following a premature birth at just 34 weeks. This medical condition delays her physical and intellectual development, and gives her sensory issues, including deteriorating vision.
Her illness has recently been compounded due to the tragic death of her father Pete, through kidney cancer, at the age of 43 last November.
Mum Lesley (45), is determined to bring a little joy back into the lives of her daughters Rebecca and Catherine (14), and was delighted when she was informed that Rebecca was selected for Caudwell Children’s annual Destination Dreams holiday to Disney World, in Florida.
Lesley explained how much such a trip would mean to Rebecca and her family: “I know there is a lot of charities which send kids to Florida, but not the family.
“So this is a really unique opportunity.
“Rebecca loves Disney, the cartoons, the dolls. So I think going to Florida for her would be a dream come true.
“And for us as a family it would get us away from the reality that we are on our own.
“There is a constant reminder here for Rebecca that her dad isn’t here. So this would mean the world to us.
“Pete would have loved this trip. I wish we had applied for this years ago.
“It just means a lot to us in our healing and gives us something to look forward to.”
Lesley hopes that the charity gets the £10,000 that it requires to provide a 24 hour medical team to care for Rebecca in Florida. As she wants to show her children that despite the death of their father, it’s still possible to enjoy life.
She said: “Their dad wanted them to have fun! Destination Dreams will give Rebecca and Catherine the opportunity to have a great time together and create some magical childhood memories.
“Throughout it all Rebecca’s medical needs will be catered for, which will be a huge weight of my mind. Without the charity’s support it simply wouldn’t be possible for us to have this kind of holiday.”
