Councillors in Midlothian have narrowly agreed to build a £33 million school with enhanced community facilities in Mayfield.

The replacement for Newbattle High will serve Mayfield, Gorebridge, Newtongrange, Moorfoot and other areas served by the existing school (pictured).

At a meeting of the Full Council in Dalkeith on June 25, the ruling SNP group proposed that a ‘community hub’ be built at the Mayfield Complex.

The motion, which was carried by eight votes to seven, asked elected members to defy officer recommendations that local community facilities - including Newbattle Swimming Pool, Mayfield Leisure Centre and switch Mayfield Library - be closed.

The Labour group’s counter-motion called for a new school minus the community hub, while retaining existing community facilities in Mayfield, Gorebridge and Newtongrange. It fell short when councillor Peter Boyes (Lab) dramatically voted with the opposition.
