Edinburgh police probe 'unexplained death' in vicinity of Leith shopping centre as area taped off

A man has died in the vicinity of a shopping centre in Leith this evening.

Police were called to reports of a man taking unwell at the Newkirkgate outdoor shopping complex shortly after 6pm – but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are treating the death as unexplained and are carrying out inquiries into the circumstances.

Pictures shared online show the area at the south end of the shopping complex by the Queen Victoria statue has been sealed off with police tape. A white tent can also be seen in the image.

A police spokesperson said: "Around 6:05pm, officers were called to the Newkirkgate areas of Leith after a man had taken unwell.

"The man was later pronounced dead at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing."
