Search for European panda ambassador comes to city

A CONTEST to unearth the next panda ambassador tasked with speaking up for one of the world’s most endangered species is being held in Edinburgh today.

The semi-final of the European-wide competition will see 24 contestants – three of whom are Scottish – complete an assault course and city centre treasure hunt as they vie for the prestigious position.

Judges will be looking for a combination of passion, drive and enthusiasm as they seek out the very best contestants to highlight the plight of the Giant Panda.

Once the shortlist is narrowed down, four European finalists will travel to China and the three winning “Pambassadors” will be announced on November 17. The eventual winner will take part in a five-month, panda conservation tour of 11 countries.

There are fewer than 1600 pandas left in the wild as a result of farming, deforestation and other development.
