Well done to Edinburgh’s civic-minded recyclers – Steve Cardownie

The sight of people queuing to use re-opened recyling centres gladdens Steve Cardownie’s heart.

Yesterday’s paper carried a full-page article, accompanied by a colour photograph, detailing the queues that formed as early as 7.30am on Monday outside the city’s recycling centres at Seafield, Sighthill and Craigmillar which aptly demonstrated that the majority of the public are law-abiding and do indeed care about the environment.

Some time ago, I highlighted the problem presented by the deplorable practice of fly-tipping and the effect that it has. Along with a photograph of the offending articles dumped at Gypsy Brae, I condemned those responsible for this blight and appealed to them (forlornly to some I suspect) and others like them to desist from dumping their unwanted goods on the streets and green spaces of the city. The temporary closure of the dumps obviously made life difficult for some people but if Monday’s evidence is anything to go by, they obviously were willing to play their part by keeping their bulky items until they re-opened.

Unfortunately, however, the fly-tippers need no excuse and will no doubt continue with their dead of night activities whether the dumps are open or not and the more that are caught and dealt with by the courts the merrier.

In contrast to the actions of these anti-social toerags, the dumps were much in demand on their reopening and the citizens that took their place in the queue are to be congratulated for taking their civic duty seriously.
