Farmers’ market kicks off Fairtrade fortnight

The event kicked off on Saturday with a special Haddington Farmers’ Market offering a host of products from the Fairtrade Foundation and will continue until March 11.

A Fairtrade party featuring a range of games is taking place today at Longniddry Church, while representatives will give an insight into the foundation at Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh, on Friday.

A coffee morning will be held at Dunbar Townhouse the following day when a Fairtrade exhibition by children from Prestonpans Primary School will also take place in Prestonpans Library.

Cllr Paul McLennan, East Lothian Council leader, said: “Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers and it enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

“It is encouraging to see how so many in our local communities have embraced Fairtrade.”
