Concerns have been raised over the width of new cycle lanes on a stretch of the main A701 road outside Glencorse Barracks, Penicuik.

Midlothian Council is in the process of introducing a new layout to improve measures for cyclists. The traffic islands have also been removed.

2SCOTS welfare office Sgt James Thomson told Penicuik Community Council last week that, to avoid oncoming traffic, motorists had to “straddle” the cycle lane.

Midlothian’s transport spokesman Councillor Derek Rosie (SNP) said the marking met with Transport Scotland guidelines and had been introduced to promote cycling.

He added: “The new road layout will help drivers appreciate the need to consider others travelling on the road, whether cyclists travelling in the same direction or any other user travelling in the opposite direction.”
