Tough new measures will be implemented to tackle motorists who drink too much or take drugs before getting behind the wheel this festive season.
Lothian and Borders Police joined forces with the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland and Scottish Government to launch this year’s drink and drug driving campaign.
First time offenders who provide a sample for analysis, which is three times the legal limit or more, or those offenders, who refuse to provide a sample for analysis without a reasonable excuse, face tougher penalties.
As well as receiving a criminal record, a substantial fine and an automatic 12-month driving ban, these motorists may also have their vehicle seized and, on conviction, have it taken away for good.
Throughout December and January local police will be conducting extra patrols and road checks to clamp down on drink and drug drivers.
