Three fire engines were called to the fire inside a building in Salamander Place at 12pm and one appliance was called to Poplar Lane less than ten minutes later.

A fire service spokesperson said the suspected gas leak was a false alarm and that it was mistaken for a "strange smell coming from a nearby building."

The spokesperson said breathing equipment and a hose reel jet was used to extinguish the fire inside the property in Salamander Place by about 12:20pm.

There were no reports of any injuries or buildings being evacuated.
