Fostering is both a challenging and rewarding experience which changes the lives not only of those in care but the families doing the caring. Fay Sinclair finds out more from one of Midlothian’s foster families.

Margaret Bernard (44) and her husband Robert (48) have been fostering for 12 years.

When they saw an advert in the Advertiser years ago, the simple fact they had a spare room was enough to prompt the Penicuik couple to consider fostering.

As well as being a way to work from home while raising their own child, they have found the experience a challenging yet rewarding one for all the family.

Now 16 and sitting his Standard Grade exams, their son David was only four when the first of their charges came to stay.

Read the family’s story in this week’s Advertiser.
