Organisers of this year’s Gorebridge Gala are also busy preparing for their big day, which falls a week after the Newtongrange event. And organisers are hoping for an even bigger turn-out this year.

The gala day itself takes place on Saturday June 21 at Gore Glen, with a parade leaving Gorebridge Bowling Club at 12.30pm. The crowning of this year’s King and Queen will be at Gore Glen at 1pm.

This event should round off another great gala week which starts with live music from local bands at Gorebridge Bowling Club on Saturday, June 14.

Arniston Bowling Club hosts a family day the following day from 2pm to 4pm. A seven-a-side football competition takes place on the Monday between the local primary schools at Gore Glen Complex. The next day a senior football competition takes place there.

On Wednesday, it’s senior citizens night from 7pm at Gorebridge Bowling Club, with bingo and dancing for free. On Thursday, it’s the primary school disco at Gorebridge Parish Church Hall from 7pm.

The last event before the gala day itself is Fabulous Friday – a fancy dress parade through the town followed by balloon making, tug of war, family races, shows and pipe bands. That runs from 6.30pm to 9pm.

Gorebridge Gala Day secretary Sarah Cornwall said: “This is our second year with the fancy dress parade and we’ve included things we can’t accommodate on the day of the gala. We had a great turn-out last year and we are hoping for more this year.

“We do a lot of fund-raising to keep the gala day going, so we also rely on people attending the events.

“We have had positive comments in the past five years that the gala is improving every single year. We are finding it difficult to better it every year, but we keep trying.”
