Midlothian Council has begun to move residents from the soon-to-be demolished Gorebridge street at the centre of a carbon dioxide saga.

Following councillors’ decision to demolish Newbyres Crescent, the local authority has started finding alternative accommodation for the council tenants from all 64 homes on the street.

At a special council meeting in June, council officers’ recommendation to demolish all the homes and either rebuild or sell the land was approved by councillors.

Since then families have started to be moved from the street into new accommodation, with the local authority happy with the process so far.

It set up a drop-in centre on the street immediately after the decision to knock down the homes was made.

Midlothian Council, said: “The arrangements to relocate families from their homes in Newbyres Crescent is going very well with 13 tenants now re-housed.

“We realise that this is a difficult time for those concerned, but our housing team aim to provide the best possible support and advice so that the moves go as smoothly as possible.”
