Residents on the Gorebridge street set to be evacuated due to a gas leak have been moved to the top of the council housing waiting list for Midlothian.

All 64 homes on Newbyres Crescent and Gore Avenue will be demolished after dangerous levels of carbon dioxide were discovered there last September, despite the council homes only being built six years ago.

The residents that live there will also get first choice for a nearby new housing estate currently under construction.

A spokesman for Midlothian Council, said: “Newbyres Crescent and Gore Avenue tenants have priority on the waiting list above all other waiting list applicants at present until they are re-housed.

“Residents are given an offer of housing at the Greenhall Site in Gorebridge which is planned for development in 2016, as one of their current housing options.”

At a special council meeting in June councillors approved council officers’ recommendation to demolish all the homes and either rebuild or sell the land. Since then families have started to be moved from the street into new accommodation.
