The chairman of the NHS group set-up to monitor the Gorebridge carbon dioxide leak has welcomed plans to demolish the affected street.

However, he is concerned about the health of residents in Newbyres Crescent, where high levels of the gas were discovered nearly a year ago.

The find led to five houses being evacuated, before councillors last month decided to demolish all 64 homes on the street.

Doctor Richard Othieno is leading the Incident Management Team (IMT) looking into the health needs of residents.

He said: “The IMT welcomes that decision, as it will eliminate the risk of exposure to the current residents of carbon dioxide. However, it [IMT]remains concerned about the long-term future of the site regarding public health. We are also concerned about the mental health and wellbeing of residents while they are being relocated.
