Work to restore the exterior of an historic Penicuik church has been completed thanks to a £10,000 grant from the National Churches Trust.

The funding has been used to finish off high level repairs of the church roof, gutters and downpipes at St James the Less Church.

In addition, the grant contributed towards the cost of the removal of moss, masonry repairs and lime mortar re-pointing. The Category B-listed church’s weather vane was also repaired.

Last week the National Churches Trust (NCT) announced a £645,000 rescue package for some of the UK’s most historic church buildings. St James, the Scottish Episcopal church in Broomhill Road, was one of only two Scottish churches to receive cash.

David McGavin, a member of St James the Less’s fabric committee, said the congregation was “really quite surprised” at the success of the NCT application.
