Gymnasts forced to quit Lasswade

A gymnastics club has taken a tumble after being kicked out of a state-of-the-art academy at the new Lasswade Centre.

Around 40 girls who train with Ibex Gymnastics Club will attend their last session there on December 9 after Midlothian Council served the club with a five-week notice to quit.

Coach Avril Mackenzie (64), from Loanhead, told the Advertiser that she was disgusted by the way in which the matter had been handled.

She said: “After nearly a ten-year let we have been given notice to quit with only a few weeks to find other facilities for our gymnasts.

“This came completely out of the blue – we were given assurances in September that our let was secure. There are a lot of irate parents and coaches. The council has shown itself to be uncaring and disrespectful to loyal customers of nearly ten years.”

The Ibex club also runs a Thursday evening class at Gracemount Leisure Centre in Edinburgh. Its membership is largely made up of girls from either Midlothian or the south side of the capital.
