Hibs to appeal Lennon ban for '˜acts of violence against ref'

Hibs are appealing a five-match suspension handed out to head coach Neil Lennon by UEFA after he was sent to the stand during the Europa League second qualifying round first-leg defeat by Brondby last month.

Lennon, leading the Easter Road club for the first time in a competitive match, was dismissed by Spanish whistler Juan Martinez Munuera for remonstrating with assistant referee Miguel Martinez after he ruled out a Jason Cummings equaliser for offside during the 1-0 loss.

The Hibs boss was banned from the dugout and dressing-room for the return tie in Denmark – which ended in a penalty shoot-out loss for the Hibees – and has now fallen foul to Article 11(2) for ‘acts of violence against the referee’.

The suspension will apply to European games and not domestic fixtures.

Hibs confirmed they will appeal, a club statement reading: “Hibernian are aware of the sanction imposed by UEFA on head coach Neil Lennon and are in the process of appealing the suspension.”
