High marks for pupils in exams boost

PUPILS who sat their Higher and Advanced Higher exams in the Capital at the start of summer have out-performed the national average, new figures confirmed today.

Standard Grade results also improved on those sat in Edinburgh in recent years, but pupils failed to beat the national average.

Education chiefs today hailed the results as “extremely encouraging” but have vowed to drive up achievements at Standard Grade level.

City education leader Councillor Marilyne MacLaren said: “I’m delighted that we can report that, against every national measure, we have improved attainment levels each and every year since 2007.

“It’s particularly pleasing to see improvements in Standard Grade attainment – an area that we’ve paid particular attention to.

“We’ve experienced difficult financial restrictions but we’ve prioritised education by focusing on investment in learning and teaching and on facilities.”
