Angry riders from Edinburgh and Lasswade Riding Centre say they always stick to the rules by staying on the paths at Springfield Mill near Polton.
But some less-responsible riders aren’t so careful and grass has been damaged as they cantered off the specified routes.
Events came to a head when a member of staff from the riding centre found the gates to the reserve padlocked.
